Preparing for your Engagement Session

Requests have been flooding in ever since the holiday about engagement sessions and wedding packages. I am SO thrilled for all of my new couples and want to help them have the BEST session they can.

Julita, Dale and I met up at Larz Anderson park mid morning, which is a time I usually like to avoid for sessions. If you’re ever stuck in a situation where you have to hold your session mid-day, your photographer will probably want to find pockets of shade to pose you in, but if they’re real pros they’ll also use reflectors and professional lights to strike the right balance.

We spent most of our time behind the auto museum at Larz Anderson enjoying the stonework, the sun on our skins in the field, studded with little white flowers, and of course the views of Boston.

I love how these two dressed for their session - smart casual is comfortable and familiar but looks good on camera. You can really tell they feel like themselves and that makes such a difference in the photos. I love how they only chose to match the navy, and the way J’s red nails matched her red lipstick perfectly. These two look so good y’all!

Here are some of my favorites tips and tricks on how to prepare for your engagement session:

RING CLEANING

If you have one and it’s possible, it is ideal to clean your ring before your session. I love to capture a few macro shots if I can, and the cleaner the better. Plus, it’s a nice excuse to show your ring a little love and lean into the joy of the session!

EMPTY YOUR POCKETS!

You don’t want to have key chains or phones showing through your pockets. This is easy to overlook but very hard to edit out.

BE MINDFUL OF TIMING

The sun rises and sets quickly, especially if your session is not in the summer months. The later you arrive, the less time we have to take pictures. If we’re meeting up for sunrise, it’s important we capture the early morning light, so the later you arrive, the more likely we’ll miss it.

DEEP BREATHS!

I’m going to help you along the way and it’s going to be a blast! I will instruct you on everything you need to know. Enjoy this time together, and make a date out of it! Plan dinner afterwards and celebrate!!

CHANGING CLOTHES

As much as I would like to say that we'll always have restrooms for outfit changes, more often than not, my clients do quick outfit changes in their car if there are no other options. We try to always include time for this if you want an outfit change. If you do go this route, most folks opt for one fancy, one more formal outfit.

COMFY KICKS

If you’re wearing shoes that are difficult to walk in but look awesome, consider bringing some comfy shoes to change into while we walk to each location.

LIP COLOR & HAIRSPRAY

If you are wearing makeup, you may need to apply more lip color after one outfit change and a few kisses. (If you have a bold lip color, try to have a matte finish so it won’t transfer to your partner as intensely!). Hairspray and a brush will be helpful if your hair struggles in the humidity.
