A Spring Engagement Session at the Arnold Arboretum

Since you’re here, you probably know I love the Arboretum. I get so many requests for sessions there year-round, and there are good reasons why! This beautiful place has it all - from the light to the blooms, from the forests to the fields and manicured gardens, spotted with ponds.

We captured this engagement session in the Spring when the light was perfect! The lush greenery and bright blooms were so pretty. These two were naturals in front of the camera, giggling away in between poses. What a blast We can’t wait to celebrate their summer wedding at the Ipswich Country Club this year. Congrats Ann-Marie + Josh!

The Arnold Arboretum, located in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, is a historic and expansive botanical garden managed by Harvard University. Established in 1872, the arboretum spans 281 acres and serves as a living museum, research facility, and educational institution. Here's a detailed description of this green oasis:

  1. Diverse Plant Collections: The arboretum is renowned for its extensive and diverse collection of trees, shrubs, and woody plants from around the world. Visitors can explore themed sections featuring plants organized by geographical origin, taxonomy, and ecology. Notable collections include the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection, a diverse Conifer Collection, and a stunning Lilac Collection.

  2. Historic Landscape Design: Designed by prominent landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the arboretum showcases his signature style that seamlessly blends natural beauty with scientific principles. The design encourages visitors to meander along winding paths, providing a sense of discovery as they explore the various plant collections.

  3. Educational Opportunities: The Arnold Arboretum serves as an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and the public alike. Educational programs, workshops, and guided tours are offered to enhance the understanding of plant biology, horticulture, and environmental conservation. The arboretum's Hunnewell Building houses a library and herbarium, contributing to botanical research.

  4. Seasonal Beauty: Throughout the year, the arboretum transforms with the changing seasons. Spring brings an explosion of color as flowering trees and shrubs, including magnolias and cherry blossoms, burst into bloom. Summer provides lush greenery and vibrant foliage, while autumn showcases a stunning display of fall colors. Even winter has its charm, with architectural beauty and the quiet serenity of snow-covered landscapes.

  5. Scenic Features: Visitors can enjoy various scenic features within the arboretum, such as meadows, ponds, and pathways that wind through wooded areas. The views from Peters Hill offer panoramic perspectives of the landscape, and the Bradley Rosaceous Collection, featuring roses and other flowering plants, adds bursts of color throughout the growing season.

  6. Accessibility and Community Engagement: The arboretum is easily accessible to the public, providing a peaceful retreat within the urban landscape of Boston. Free and open to all, it encourages community engagement and appreciation for the natural world. Special events, including plant sales and festivals, bring people together to celebrate the beauty and importance of plant life.

With its diverse plant collections, historic landscape design, and commitment to education, the Arnold Arboretum continues to be a cherished green space for both locals and visitors seeking refuge in the tranquility of nature.
